BB2C Business Perspective: Stacy Parks, Memorial Health System
Building a High School internship program takes time. Stacy Parks, from Memorial Health System, has worked diligently over the last two years to put together an experience for area students that works for the hospital system and for students that wish to participate in longer term work-based learning experiences. Round two participants were selected just yesterday!! In her own words…
Memorial Health System is committed to providing an environment where students can explore, learn and grow their future. We are proud to be continuing these efforts through our high school internship program which allows selected upcoming high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore the wide array of clinical positions within the health system. This program provides an interactive field experience for students to learn about the responsibilities of each position, the growth opportunities in each field, and the education and licensures required for each position. Students are given the opportunity to prepare for their future through real world experiences which provide insight into the requirements of various positions. Each student is connected with healthcare professionals through rotations in surgery, perioperative areas, emergency department, rehabilitation, imaging, inpatient nursing, laboratory, respiratory therapy and with physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician’s assistants.
In addition to the interaction and education the program rotations offer, the students are exposed to the inner-workings of an employment process. Students must qualify, apply and interview to participate in the competitive program. To qualify as an applicant, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0, must have good attendance, and have no serious discipline issues along with positive recommendations from their guidance counselor and/or teachers. Students also have to complete an online application with an accompanying essay. Once the applications are reviewed, the selected finalists are then interviewed by a panel of healthcare leaders to determine the participating interns. The goal of this program and accompanying process is to address both workforce development and college readiness with these students.
This year, Memorial Health System has partnered with four local high schools to provided 20 students the opportunity to explore the healthcare fields through this program. We would like to thank Marietta, Warren, Caldwell, and Shenandoah High Schools for their partnership in promoting the careers within healthcare through this program. Memorial Health System is proud to announce the 2018 participants: Caitlyn Corpman, Kaitlyn McClead, Nadine Lee-Oliver, Rachel Schofield, Tia Jarvis, Madison Sayre, Matalynn Clark, Abigail Gutowski, Alexis Miller, Jessica Merrill, Madison McVicker, Mya Stahl, Raegan Flood, Brady Nicewarner, Casey Brague, Caspen Ford, Cullen Martin, Jenna Walters, Makayla Aiken, and Mya Smith. Congratulations to all our high school interns!
