BB2C Epicenter Makerspace: It's Official!
The ribbon has been cut! Last Wednesday, the Makerspace held its grand opening ceremony to officially mark the beginning of this new adventure for the Mid-Ohio Valley. The Epicenter Makerspace offers classes of a wide variety, and equipment that can be used by the general public through monthly memberships (like gym memberships). Not sure how you would use a makerspace? Stop in...we'll give you a tour, ask about your creative or making interests and develop sessions just for you (like a personal trainer). Right now, we have a variety of woodworking equipment, four 3D printers, a vinyl cutter, a cricut, and sewing machines. In the near future, we will have a laser cutter and other computer controlled equipment.
We would especially like to thank Brian Haskell from HITech Inc., and John Martincic, from Forest Scientific, for making our grand opening special. They provided demonstrations on a CNC router with a plasma cutter, a laser cutter, and Fablicator 3D printers (basically our wish list of equipment!). It was amazing how quickly something can be made on these machines, and many open house participants walked away with an item made right then! We would also like to thank the Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce for coordinating the ribbon cutting, and ALL OF YOU that dropped by to help us celebrate.
This summer will be busy for the Makerspace, as we are in the process of developing programs for youth in the area (look for announcements) and for anyone interested in becoming members of the Makerspace. Stay tuned for information about a multi-week class that will help you get comfortable with our woodworking equipment and prepare you for working independently during open making hours. Or, if you prefer to learn one-on-one, we will also have a woodshop coach that can help you get started. Teachers....look for information on a professional development opportunity in the fall that will help you make connections between the Makerspace and your curriculum.
