New Business in the Incubator! HMB Music Therapy
The newest addition to the Epicenter Incubator space is Martha Webster, owner of HMB Music Therapy, LLC, providing music therapy for heart, mind and body. Martha shares what music therapy is, "It is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. In the most basic of terms, music therapy is the use of music to work towards meeting non-musical goals related to the physical, cognitive, emotional, and/or spiritual goals of the client. Music therapists work with people of any age and ability."
Martha is also an elementary music teacher at Phillips Elementary and received her National Board Certification in Music Therapy in June, 2019. Her practicum experience occurred in a variety of age groups and settings, including memory care, nursing facilities, assisted living, day camp for children and teens with developmental disabilities, and children with autism and developmental disabilities. With her certification, she was ready to open her own business providing music therapy to the community.
Why did you decide to start your music therapy business?
Music therapy is a quickly growing field but one that is relatively new compared to many other forms of therapy. I wanted to be able to offer individual and group sessions for a wide variety of clients and found that starting my own private practice would be the best way to accomplish this.
What do you hope to accomplish with your business?
I want to be able to offer music therapy to clients of any age, ability, or diagnoses. I would like to eventually offer music circles at the Epicenter, in addition to seeing individual clients. Community outreach, especially working with the various residential nursing and assisted living communities, is something that I look forward to in the future.
Why did you decide to become a part of the Epicenter?
As a music teacher with the Marietta City Schools, I knew of the Epicenter already. Tasha Werry gave a presentation at the beginning of the school year and I felt drawn to reach out about a possible office space there. I was very fortunate that there was a space available and I was able to start my private practice at the location. I love that it is a small business incubator and that there is a wide variety of businesses under one roof.
As a teacher and business owner, Martha believes very strongly in the mission and vision of Building Bridges to Careers, stating, "Young people cannot start soon enough thinking and planning for their future. It is an amazing opportunity to have them explore careers and intern with a variety of businesses. This allows them to see what it is actually like working in a particular field and gives them the experience and insight to decide if that truly is the field they want to work in or if they might want to explore a different path."
