Students Interested in Law Enforcement Learn from Local Agencies

When students express an interest in law enforcement and are asked why they are interested, the resounding answer is always because they want "to help". Every semester, BB2C has a large number of students who reach out to us and enquire about this career pathway. To meet the demand, in 2020 we created Discover Law Enforcement Day. This past fall’s event was the first time we were able to hold the event in-person since its inception.

Thanks to Washington State Community College, 16 students from Warren High School and the Washington County Career Center participated in two law enforcement activities put on by the Washington County Sheriff's Office. First, students were able to practice processing a crime scene. Then, they had an opportunity to learn about the auxiliary unit through a drone presentation.

Finally, the students partook in a networking luncheon with officers from the Washington County Sheriff’s K-9 unit, the Marietta College chief of police, and an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer to discuss career pathways, including education and training requirements.

Jona Rinard, Dean of Transfer and Public Service at Washington State Community College had positive things to say about collaborating on the event with BB2C. “Discover Law Enforcement Day is a great way for area high school students to develop a better understanding of the role various law enforcement agencies play in our community. In addition, it gives them a chance to see the various skill sets and talents that go into the criminal justice system and how they could become involved. By holding the event at Washington State Community College, students were able to see how they can start that path as early as high school and earn an Associates in Criminal Justice or transfer on for a four year degree at another institution.”

Students gave positive feedback about the event as well. One student said, "I will use what I learned today to make a more educated decision on which organization to choose."

Discover Days provide opportunities for students to learn about and hear from people in a field or industry so that they are more equipped to make informed decisions about potential career paths. We wouldn't be able to offer these events for students in Washington County without the support of our community & organization partners.

This spring, we have more Discover Days planned. For more information about them, email Tonya Davis, Program & Events Facilitator, at tdavis@bb2careers.org.
