Interns in Appalachia

BECAs, organizations that conduct work around business engagement with career awareness, were busy connecting high school students in Appalachia with business internship opportunities this past summer. The BB2C Network was able to support these organizations, such as Project RISE in Athens. Hear from our Network Team, as well as from the interns themselves:

"These summer internships are life-changing. I have watched students become more active in their communities because of jobs they have been able to take that they didn't even know existed." Jordan Spence, BB2C Network Coordinator

"Providing and facilitating internships are critical pieces in connecting businesses and students. Establishing experiences and creating connections increase opportunities for all involved and allow our communities to thrive." Jeremy Ward, BB2C Network Director

"Businesses that hosted interns reported feeling happy that they were able to contribute to the next generation's development and were glad for the help. The BB2C Network Team looks forward to helping these opportunities continue to grow throughout Southeastern Ohio." Claire Ramsey, BB2C Network Resource Coordinator

My experience at the Float Shack was nothing but amazing! For a first job, I loved it here. It’s very laid back and fun!

TROUVAILLE FARMS INTERN

I had a wonderful time interning at Trouvaille Farm. I learned about the microbiology of soil, how to care for a diverse variety of plants, and the process of making chocolate. I hope I'll get the opportunity to come back next summer.

OHIO UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY INTERN

I decided to do this internship because I had nothing better to do this summer...but I quickly became emotionally involved in two projects, website design and GIS locating; the latter of which I had no idea even existed. I gained experience in areas that I would have never guessed I found interesting.

SOLID GROUND FARM INTERN

This was a grueling summer spent laboring under the hot sun in the orchards and fields at Solid Ground. However, my work did not go without the reward of cool water, fresh air, and tons of mulberries.

VINTON COUNTY CVB INTERN

I have really enjoyed my experience working at the Vinton County Visitors Bureau. It has been a great opportunity to give back to my community while learning more about my community, it’s past, and its people. I have taken skills from this experience that I will keep with me for the rest of my life.

This internship has been an amazing opportunity for me! I have learned many things about the county that I have spent my whole life living in including how much wildlife is in our county and how many people come together to get work done. I’m happy that I joined this internship and I can’t wait to see what we have in store for the future!
