How do you host a high school intern?
“What can you do with a high school intern?” This is a common question we receive. Businesses are often interested in hosting a high school intern, but want to know more about what it could look like. And so do our high school students!
Our internships start at 40 hours. So, what CAN a high school student do for you for 40 hours? Some ideas, shared by past business hosts, include having them spend time:
Onboarding: Tell them about your organization, your position, the work that is being done, the impact the work has on the field/industry and the impact the field/industry has on the community
Attending meetings with staff to learn about what’s happening, give feedback, and complete delegated tasks if appropriate
Assisting with administrative work including copying, filing, and answering phones
Running errands such as dropping off and picking up materials
Assisting with events and programs, including planning, set-up, and implementation
Helping Inventory/cataloging/label
Organizing files (electronic or hard copy)
Researching needed information
Assisting with social media, marketing, and photos
Decorating spaces for holidays or special events
Writing and/or mailing notes, newsletters, campaigns, etc.
Working on a specific project, task, or need over their 40 hours
And much more!
