Healthcare Pathways

Students exploring healthcare

DeeAnn Gehlauf, VP, Business & Organization Development at Memorial Health System opened our Discover Healthcare Pathways event on Friday, January 26. She shared with the students and educators,

“People who gravitate towards healthcare are people who like to help people… It is such a privilege and honor to care for people who are sometimes at their worst… Healthcare is not an industry that will go away… You will always have a job available to you.”

Opening speaker

This first Discover Day of the spring semester was held at Washington State Community College and sponsored by Memorial Health System. Fifty students from Washington and surrounding counties explored six different healthcare pathways, including clinicals, lab, nursing, surgical, radiology, and respiratory. Presenters came from both Memorial Health System and Washington State Community College as well as from Washington County Career Center-Adult Tech. Students came from Belpre, Caldwell, Fort Frye, Frontier, Homeschool, Marietta, Swiss Hills, Warren, Washington County Career Center, and Waterford.

Warren High School Educator Jenny Lynch reflected,

“Today’s event was super informative. It gave my students a lot of information about various healthcare careers. It was so nice seeing the students excited to dig deeper into different pathways that they didn’t even know existed. My students and I are so appreciative of the hard work that went into the planning of this event.”

Frontier senior Maquelah Walker, who plans to study nursing after graduation, shared,

“The event allowed me to have a broader mindset about careers in healthcare. It was quite informative and now I know that I have many career options to choose from, not just one!”

Other student feedback included:

It helped me figure out what classes would be the best for me to take in high school to give myself the best chance to get into the programs offered.

Helped me have a clean image of what I want and don’t want.

It helped broaden my choices for future careers.

It taught me about the technology that is being developed to help people all over the world.

It helped me understand what I need to do to prepare.

It made me think more about where to go to school and what options were available for my career.

This experience gave me more details about the careers and the paths offered. This experience provided me with the knowledge of all opportunities provided to me to make my careerpath journey simpler.

Being able to experience actually “working” the job really made me feel more excited and want to look into respiratory.
