Leading through Internships
At Building Bridges to Careers (BB2C) we believe in the power of experience and education to transform lives and inspire career choices. This summer, we were thrilled to welcome three talented interns who brought their energy, creativity, and passion to a variety of projects. Together, they worked tirelessly to make a lasting impact on our community.
Payton Brooker, a Fort Frye graduate and a rising Senior at Ohio University studying journalism, interned with us through OU’s Summer AmeriCorps program. He was able to visit with our students, businesses, and partners to share how their stories intertwined with ours.
Payton utilized the knowledge he had from his classes at Ohio University to help BB2C utilize professional videotaping of the June Community and Business Advisory Council meeting. He served as the liaison between our videographer and BB2C and also reviewed all footage to identify the parts that were most pertinent. These clips will be utilized for an FAQ section on internships as well as promotional highlights encouraging businesses to utilize high school internships. Not only did Payton help BB2C, but he also shared that he learned a lot from a professional in the field.

Lynncoln Tynan, a rising Sophomore at Ohio Northern University majoring in mechanical engineering, graduated from Marietta High School with a STEM Honors diploma and had an opportunity to attend BB2C engineering events as a high school student. She joined us this summer as our STEAM Camp intern.
Lynncoln helped with improvements to our creative spaces as well as STEAM Camp planning and facilitating. It was awesome to work with Lynncoln and watch her develop skills that she can apply to engineering and design.

Sophia Novo graduated from Marietta High School this spring and earned two associate degrees from Washington State Community College. She’ll be attending The Ohio State University. Sophie volunteered with Students Solving Problems (SSP) and attended the Youth to Youth International Conference while in high school. She was our summer SSP intern, funded by the Appalachian Children Coalition, and helped with programs and events that positively impacted student behavioral health.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with Sophie over the past year. She is a natural leader who brings students together and provides a positive environment for them to thrive in. Having her spearhead our summer SSP efforts was a fantastic experience for everyone involved.
~ Heather Miller, Students Solving Problems Coordinator
All three interns had a chance to work together on tasks such as event planning, organization, leading our STEAM Camp, renovating the conference room, and creating a new pollinator habitat-focused Green Space. Their passion for making a difference was infectious, and their dedication shone through in every project they undertook. BB2C had a successful summer because of our intern leaders.
