Driverless Vehicles in SE Ohio? Yep...and we need teachers to get involved.

Driverless vehicles in rural southeast Ohio….it is happening. DriveOhio has received a federal grant to deploy automated driving systems in our hilly, rural region of the state. This will take place in Athens and Vinton counties. DriveOhio is doing a lot to research and develop Smart Mobility around the state, which has put Ohio at the forefront of the Smart Mobility movement. Columbus, specifically, is on its way to becoming the first Smart City in the United States…who knew?

How will this impact rural southeast Ohio? Ummmmm…. This question remains unanswered at this point, which is why we need to start talking about it. And because we are BB2C, we fully believe that we need to get our students involved in the conversation. This is their future as much as it is ours. In order to get students involved, we need teachers to be involved.

A free event scheduled for January 31, titled: The Future of Smart Mobility in SE Ohio, marks the kick-off of this conversation. Buckeye Hills Regional Council is hosting the event and is looking to include teachers and community leaders from Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Monroe, Noble, Morgan, Perry, and Washington Counties.

  • The morning will focus on bringing attendees up to speed on what our region has been doing in this realm and is open to anyone that wants to find out more. The panel discussion will include DriveOhio and Ohio University.

  • The afternoon is dedicated to providing resources and avenues for teachers to include their students in this work through problem-based learning. Teachers can choose to attend:1) OSLN Design Challenge #STEMdrivesOhio, supported by PAST Foundation with free STEM professional development; 2) BB2C Problem Scenario Project; and 3) DriveOhio: Transportation Paradox.

Get registered and spread the word. Driverless vehicles are coming!
