Mentors and Mentees Hangin' at MC!
Setting a goal and then reaching it, makes you feel really good about yourself.
This is just one concept that students who participated in the 3rd Annual BB2C Mentor Program Trip to Marietta College learned about on Friday, January 24. A total of 74 students and 20 mentors came together to explore mindfulness and how it can impact our lives.
The day began with the mentors meeting separately to discuss the progress they are making in establishing a relationship with their students. Part of this discussion centered around the process of goal setting. The mentors worked in groups to discuss their successes and to collaborate and stretch themselves as mentors.
Once the students arrived, students and mentors heard from the guest speaker, Jessie Fluharty, a local yoga instructor. Jessie shared her life journey and gave examples of her own goal setting and how accomplishing goals through hard work made her more confident and able to reach her dream career. She then led the combined group through a yoga mindfulness activity that included a breathing exercise. When asked about the day, many students indicated this exercise was one of their favorites.
Their most favorite part of the day, however, was the team building activities lead by Maribeth Saleem-Tanner, Director of Civic Engagement at Marietta College, where they were asked to explore taking risks and exploring how they felt about stepping out of their comfort zone. By the end of the event, students and mentors from all across Washington County were laughing and talking. Over 90% of the students who attended, rated the day a huge success! Just one of the ways our BB2C Mentor Program is making a difference in our students’ lives.
