Family Career Awareness Day Recap

Tonya Davis, Program & Event Facilitator

While we missed the energy of seeing our students and businesses in person at Family Career Awareness Day this year, we were happy to hear that our virtual event had much to offer to students, families, and local businesses. We received positive feedback from the students who participated or viewed the panel.

So far, we’ve had over 100 students and families experience the 2020 FCAD panel. This year’s audience included a large number of middle school participants while also seeing an increase in high school participants as the Marietta High School Career Search class incorporated the event into their curriculum.

Our event feedback survey provided us insight into what the students took away from the event:

I will use what I learned to better apply myself to a job that I am pursuing. ~Marietta High School 10th grade student

Attending the Virtual Family Career Awareness Day was an assignment that I had to complete but I would have wanted to attend had it not been an assignment. It is always fun and exciting to learn about what other careers are out there and locally too! ~Marietta High School 10th grade student

I will use what I learned to lead a better life. ~Frontier 7th grade student

It was a class requirement but I am glad I attended because I found it quite interesting. ~Marietta High School 10th grade student

I will use what I learned to continue searching for possible job careers. I now have new ideas for fields I might want to explore. ~Marietta High School 10th grade student

I will use what I learned today to become a better worker. ~Marietta High School 11th grade student

I will use what I learned today to prepare myself for a career path in my area. ~Frontier 8th grade student

We were pleased to see that the virtual Family Career Awareness Day panel was still able to positively impact students' thoughts regarding their career decisions.

If you haven’t had a chance to see this year’s panel, the recording is available on our website. Check it out now to hear from panelists representing Memorial Health System, Micro Machine Works, IBEW, OTCO, and Burgess and Niple.

We’d like to thank our panelists for providing students with information about local businesses and local career opportunities. Also, we’d like to give a special thank you to Washington Electric Cooperative, Inc. for sponsoring this year’s event.

While we look forward to the possibility of returning to FCAD in-person in 2021, we have also learned the value of being able to offer a recorded event for classroom use. We have already started brainstorming ways to offer both an in-person event and a recorded event next year to ensure we can reach an event larger number of local students.
