Student Ideas Wanted!

Heather Miller, Outreach Facilitator

Marietta College is hosting their annual Junior PioBiz Competition this spring.  This virtual event is being sponsored by the Riverview Credit Union Mid-Ohio Valley Entrepreneurship Expo.  High school students who have an idea to solve a problem can present their solution and compete for prizes.  They can compete on their own or in a team consisting of up to five members.  There is a Zoom workshop entitled Where do worthy entrepreneurial ideas come from? on February 4 at 4:30 p.m. for students/teams who are interested in learning more and brainstorming ideas.  Students can register for this pre-event workshop here.

If students are interested in competing, they must ask their school to fill out an Intent to Compete Form on their behalf by February 8.  Each student/team must then fill out and submit an application by March 29.  The application questions include:

  • The project (product or service) name and description

  • The nature of the problem that the proposed product or service solves

  • The demographic characteristics of people with this problem

  • The way the problem is currently solved

  • The description of the way the proposed product or service solve the problem

  • The description of how this product solves the problem better than the alternative (existing) solutions.

The Junior PioBiz Competition will be via Zoom on April 8 starting at 4:30 p.m.  Each student/team will have 3 minutes to present their idea to the judges, followed by a 3 minute Q&A session with the judges.

All students/teams will receive a Marietta College gift bag for competing.  The teams with the top five ideas will receive a certificate of achievement and a monetary team prize ranging from $50 to $250.  The student members of the team with the top idea will also receive a free 3-credit hour college class
