Jenna, a Junior Sewist
The Macmillian Dictionary explains that the term “sewist” combines “sew” and “artist” and is gaining popularity in the sewing community. It certainly describes 11-year-old Jenna Taylor. Jenna attends the BB2C Jr. Sewing Lessons on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. She has been combining her new-found sewing skills with her artistic flair to create some fantastic pieces.
The sixth grader, who has been sewing for a year, designed and created 12 unique gifts to give this past holiday season. BB2C Makerspace Fiber Arts Content Expert, Ann Siegfried, reflected on working with Jenna, “She has become quite an accomplished seamstress. She chooses her own projects and we work together to make them happen. She is such a joy to work with!”
Adding up all she’s done, Jenna happily shares that she’s created 28 pieces so far. She says that her favorite thing to sew is pillows. And the hardest project she’s done so far is a rag quilt.
Makerspace Assistant, Holly Hamrick, was impressed with Jenna’s work. She shared that, “not only is [Jenna] very talented, but she’s so thoughtful. Each of her gifts has been made with specially selected fabrics and details for each recipient.”
BB2C Makerspace open-making hours are for members in middle school and up. Youth memberships cost $20 a month and kids 15 and younger must have a parent or guardian with them. Some classes, like Jr. Sewing Lessons, are specifically for younger kids (ages 9 – 14) and a parent/guardian must stay during the class time.
The BB2C Makerspace also hosts field-trips for local schools and is a great place to plan parties or events for kids, and youth groups/youth organizations. Parties and events can be tailored depending on age, number in the group, and interest. For more information about youth memberships, youth classes, and scheduling an event for youth, contact us at makerspace@bb2careers.org or give us a call at 740-370-6399, extension 5.
