Marketing the Museum

High school interns tackle a lot of different projects for their organizations. Just ask Marietta High School junior, Madison Butler, who interned for the Toy & Doll Museum. While her main career interest is in art, she was able to translate and apply her skills by developing marketing materials for the museum

The Toy & Doll Museum is an all-volunteer run organization in Marietta, OH. Their board worked closely with Madison, and BB2C, to identify and create new marketing opportunities. With Madison’s willingness to take on and try new things, they were able to launch their first-ever website, create a rack card to share in the community to encourage people to visit, start an instagram account to capture the many unique exhibits in the museum, and design and print a wooden ornament to sell to visitors through BB2C’s Makerspace.

“Working with Madison has been an outstanding experience,” shared Kim Reese, the Toy & Doll Museum Board President. “Her insight regarding what appeals to a younger age bracket and her creative view have been essential to our new marketing plan and products.”

Madison’s efforts on behalf of the museum have been impressive. She learned how to build a website from scratch. She also reiterated the importance of researching before jumping into a project. Madison made sure to spend a good amount of time exploring the museum and getting to know its exhibits and its brand before she started working on the projects. She shared that it is important to keep an open mind and “go with the flow” when working with an organization, especially one that is volunteer-run. Madison’s creativity, flexibility, and skill in connecting and working with a group of individuals with different personalities and ideas will serve her well as she completes high school and finishes her business degree at Washington State Community College.

BB2C appreciated the enthusiasm from Kim Reese and the board, both in taking on a high school intern and also in thinking of unique ways to utilize the BB2C Makerspace. Not only did an ornament come out of the collaboration, but also a beautiful sponsorship board that was designed and installed by Makerspace staff and museum volunteers. “We love working with organizations and people in Harmar Village,” Heather Miller, BB2C Communications & Engagement Coordinator said. “BB2C is a part of Harmar. We work to support thriving communities not only throughout the county and region, but also right here where we are.”
