The Return of Teacher Tours!
By Emily Bentley, BB2C Education Engagement Specialist
In the ever-evolving landscape of education, teachers are the guiding stars for their students, helping them navigate towards successful futures. However, one significant hurdle remains: many educators lack firsthand knowledge of local career opportunities and pathway programs. This gap can lead to uninformed decisions by students, potentially impacting their post-high school success. Enter Teacher Tours, an immersive summer professional development experience designed to address this very challenge for educators in Southeastern Ohio.
Teacher Tours is not just a program; it’s an enriching and connective experience. This program brings educators face-to-face with regional employers, offering an invaluable opportunity to understand the career landscapes their students will one day enter. By visiting local businesses, teachers can observe and inquire about the skills and knowledge that are most sought after in various industries.
This summer, educators toured six diverse businesses: Syensqo, SAI Tech, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Appalachian Ohio Manufacturers' Coalition (AOMC), iTech Technology Solutions, and Little Muskingum Kettle Farm. Additionally, they visited Washington State College of Ohio (WSCO) and Washington County Career Center (WCCC) to learn about career pathway programs for high school students and adults that align with local in-demand job opportunities.
During these tours, educators were encouraged to ponder two critical Guiding Questions:
“What are the most important skills students must have to be successful within this specific industry and why?”
“How should (and can) education change to be more relevant to students’ lives and future careers?”
These questions prompt educators to think deeply about the alignment between their teaching and the real-world demands of the workforce. As they explore the intricacies of different industries, from advanced manufacturing to healthcare, they gain insights that can reshape their approach to education.
Local businesses have expressed their appreciation for the program. One representative stated, "We believe in BB2C's mission and are honored to be a small part in bridging the gap between our community workforce needs and youth of our area." Another added, "Any form of insight we can receive from our educators is always welcomed, for as they are helping build our future team. Teachers that take time out of their day to further educate themselves for our children's benefit is always rewarding. Thank you for all you do!"
The impact of Teacher Tours extends far beyond the classroom. Educators return with a renewed perspective, ready to become credible advocates for their students. They can now guide their students with informed advice about local career opportunities, helping them make decisions that are aligned with their strengths and interests.
