STUDENT PATH-MAKERS: Finding Passion in Agriculture and Media
Career exploration is more than having students identify and follow predetermined career paths, it is about empowering them to combine their interests and experiences to create unique career pathways. Students can be career path-makers, not just career path-takers.
Alexis White, a junior at Fort Frye High School, has charted an inspiring career path in agricultural communications through her involvement with FFA, 4H, and media reporting. Her passion for agriculture grew from her father’s experience with the FFA organization, which encouraged Alexis to follow in his footsteps. Attending the Washington Leadership Conference this past summer allowed her to connect with FFA members from across the U.S., expanding her network and fueling her enthusiasm for the field.
Initially considering a career in medicine, Alexis ultimately found her calling in agriculture and journalism. She became a student reporter for Ohio Ag Net and Ohio’s Country Journal, where she was able to work behind the scenes at the 96th Ohio FFA State Convention. Her duties allowed her to explore skills in videography, photography, writing, and interviewing, which quickly transpired into a personal interest. A few months later, she had the opportunity to capture fair events, interview competitors, and air stories on local radio stations with WMOA Radio and Jaws Classic Country.
Alexis has built connections with industry mentors through her work and aims to keep informing and uplifting her community through agricultural media. She’s looking at Ohio State’s Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI) as a potential next step to grow her communications career. Currently, Alexis serves as Fort Frye FFA’s Secretary and is applying for a state FFA office role for the 2025-26 year. Her involvement continues year-round with an internship at Campbell Farms, livestock showing, and managing her own projects, including market lambs, with her family’s support.
Alexis’ advice to her fellow students?
"Figure out what you’re passionate about! I find it difficult that at a young age, we are told to figure out our career path for the rest of our lives. For some of us, this can be very challenging. Find something that resonates with you, like journalism or agriculture, and pursue it with heart. At the end of the day, you should be able to enjoy yourself while also serving your community."
For Alexis, this path in agricultural communications has allowed her to grow her skills, stay close to her roots, and inspire others along the way.
