Summer STEM & STEAM
Summer STEM Challenge
This Summer, the Governor's Office of Appalachia funded the BB2C Makerspace's Summer STEM Challenge. Five teams from various high schools in Appalachia competed on both an individual and a team level to win prizes for themselves and their schools. The challenge ran from June 14 - 25.vEach team consisted of five students and a teacher. This year's teams were from Zanesville High School, Nelsonville-York High School, Scioto Tech, Warren High School, and Shenandoah High School.
The teams were tasked with designing and 3D printing the best wheel. They received printing instructions, engineering tips, and design feedback. The school winner was Zanesville High School, who took home a $3000 credit for STEM equipment for their school. The individual winners were Ty Finan and Noah Pierce of Nelsonville-York, who took 1st and 3rd place respectively and won a 3D Printer and $200, and Max Mercer of Zanesville who won 2nd place and an Oculus Quest 2 VR Headset. Prizes were provided by the Appalachian Ohio Manufacturers' Coalition.
Summer STEAM Camp
Also this summer, the BB2C Makerspace has teamed up with the Ely Chapman Education Foundation to bring five weeks of STEAM Camp to kids in grades K through 8. Each week is themed after a different aspect of STEAM. STEAM Camp started June 21 and runs every-other-week.
Science Week: Students learned how to build their own rubber band powered helicopters.
Technology Week: Students learned what makes computers work as well as the basics of computer coding using robots.
Engineering Week: Students competed to build the longest scaled bridge they can with straws and connectors.
Art Week: Students will be painting individual letters of the alphabet that will be pieced together to create a community art project.
Math Week: Students will be learning "magic" tricks that actually work due to different principles of mathematics.
